To begin the semester we will look at the different understandings of what bilingual education is as political, cultural and educational forces have influenced the objectives of bilingual education in different countries. We will also consider the development of bilingual education models, paying particular attention to the European model of bilingual education, namely Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). Focussing on the primary level, the questions of what CLIL entails and how it can be implemented in the European context will be discussed. A theoretical background to CLIL, including the ideas of the Language Triptych and the 4Cs (Coyle, 2007; Coyle, Hood & Marsh, 2010), will be explored in detail. Based on this background knowledge, students will look at how one can create and evaluate materials appropriate for the bilingual primary classroom.
By the end of this course, students will have read a number of texts about bilingual education and should, therefore, possess a good understanding of it and be able to engage in meaningful discourse about the topic. Furthermore, students should be able to plan, create and critically evaluate their own bilingual lessons in a primary school.
There will be a reader for this course, containing articles and chapters from various authors. Further information will be given in the first session.
