„Es ist nicht leicht zu sagen, was eigentlich die Novelle sei, und wie sie sich von den verwandten Gattungen, Roman und Erzählung unterscheide... Man gibt mit dem Namen bald zu viel, bald zu wenig. Es ist zu viel, wenn man geradezu sagt, die Novelle müsse eine ausgesprochene Tendenz haben, aber doch erwartet man in ihr etwas Hervorspringendes, eine Spitze... Man wird die scharfe, epigrammatische Pointe auch nicht zu sehr herausheben dürfen... Es ist schwer, hier einen allgemeinen Begriff zu finden, auf den sich alle Erscheinungen dieser Art zurückbringen ließen.” Ludwig Tieck: Gespräche. 1849-1853 1
In diesem Seminar sollen die Gattungsmerkmale der Novelle und ihre Modifizierung auf ihrem Weg durch die verschiedenen Epochen anhand einiger ausgewählter Beispiele untersucht und verglichen werden.
