Mosaiken, Intarsien, Pietre dure und andere Einlegearbeiten sind sehr alte Bildtechniken, die aber zumeist an den Rändern kunsthistorischer Betrachtungen verbleiben. Auf Fußböden, Wänden oder Möbeln positioniert haben sie teil an Architekturen und der privaten menschlichen Sphäre. Sie stellen ihre eigene Materialität explizit aus und machen sich diese für die Darstellung zunutze. Als von vorherein aus diskreten Einheiten aufgebaut, fordern sie einheitliche Werkkonzepte sowie klassische kunsthistorische Kategorien von Figur und Grund heraus.
Das Seminar widmet sich einigen klassischen aber auch weniger kanonischen Beispielen von Einlegearbeiten und möchte an ihnen gängige kunsthistorische Begriffe diskutieren.
