Obwohl andere psychische Störungen wesentlich häufiger sind, ist das Bild der psychischen Erkrankung in der Öffentlichkeit weitgehend geprägt von psychotischen Störungen wie der Schizophrenie, mit den spektakulären Symptomen von Wahn und Halluzination. Dabei herrscht das Vorurteil, sowohl der psychotische Patient als auch die Krankheit seien letztlich unberechenbar und unerklärlich. Im Seminar soll der gegenwärtige Erkenntnisstand im Bereich der diagnostischen, epidemiologischen, ätiologischen und therapeutischen Forschung zu psychotischen Erkrankungen, mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Schizophrenie, erarbeitet werden. Damit kann auch überprüft werden, welcher Fortschritt im Verständnis und in der Behandlung der Krankheit in den letzten Jahrzehnten erreicht wurde.
