250369 Educational Inclusion and Exclusion as practices of difference and Othering (BS) (SoSe 2022)

Contents, comment

This course will be held in a bilingual English-German co-teaching format with Prof. Dr. Anna Kirova (the University of Alberta, Canada) and Mark Schäffer-Trencsényi (University of Bielefeld).

The aim of this course will be to introduce the students to the field of inter- and transnational comparative educational research and to gain an under-standing of practices of difference including Othering. For instance, we will discuss the unique problems and dif-ficulties refugees and fugitives including their children may come across when emigrating to Canada (and Europe).

In doing so, the inter- and transnational perspective will help us to look at the persistence on the one hand, but also at the possibilities for change of educational institutions and systems on the other hand and to critically reflect the normative rules of school and teaching. Not only newcomers in Canada and Europe may face challenges in the educational system, which is why we will also focus on other forms of difference in teaching and learning, including gender, sexual identity and (dis)ability.

Students thus learn to reflect on (im)possibilities of individuals within educational systems and expand their knowledge of global educational phenomena. In this way, students can be sensitised to (their own) actions in fields of education and reflect on inclusion as a reform project 'at home' and in the world.

Please note that Prof. Dr. Anna Kirova’s stay at Bielefeld University is mainly financed by the International Guest Lecturer Program and also in parts by the Faculty of Educational Science.
