285480 Modern topics in particle physics (V) (WiSe 2025/2026)

Contents, comment

This lecture aims at presenting a variety of modern topics in the context of particle physics. After a brief review of QFT and representation theory, we will discuss aspects of :

  • The renormalization process
  • The Standard Model of Particle Physics
  • Effective Field Theories
  • Beyond the Standard Model Physics and Grand Unified Theories

The examination will consist of a blackboard presentation by the student on a topic relevant to the lecture and a small discussion.

The first lecture will be on Friday 17th October 2025, starting at 10:15, in D6-135.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

Students should have attended a course on :

  • Quantum Field Theory

and be familiar with Lagrangians, Feynman diagrams

  • Group Theory

and be familiar with representations.
