400006 Global Health Politics and Agents (English intermediate level) (BS) (WiSe 2010/2011)

Contents, comment

The course is aimed at students who wish to enhance their English speaking and writing competencies by jointly working on international public health topics. We will look into political processes and structures of health at the global level, which have recently been described as ‘global health governance’. Besides the international agencies and traditional fora such as the World Health Assembly, a number of new agents have emerged in the non-governmental and private sector over the last decades. Advocacy is becoming an increasingly important field of health communication. As an example, we will focus on the global discourses and mechanisms that have evolved around the topic of Human Resources for Health. Students in this course will search information about different players and processes, in order to present and discuss them in the group. They will also produce short texts that will be peer-reviewed by group members. Constructive feedback will be given on performance and language skills.

Requirements for participation, required level

The course is held completely in English (intermediate level). Basic knowledge of Public Health/Health Communication is required.
