Die Geschichte der deutschen Sprache wird mit einem Schwerpunkt auf den Erscheinungen der älteren Sprachstufen Althochdeutsch, Mittelhochdeutsch und Frühneudeutsch im Überblick vorgestellt. Als Teil der indo-europäischen Sprachfamilie und des Westgermanischen wird das Hochdeutsche in seiner besonderen Stellung in älterer Zeit nach Laut- und Formenlehre behandelt. Die Herausbildung einer einheitlichen Schriftsprache im 16./17. Jahrhundert durch technische, soziale und pädagogische Neuerungen (Stichworte: Buchdruck, Kanzleiwesen, Grammatiker u.a.), der Wandel der syntaktischen Erscheinungen im Frühneuhochdeutschen, der Bedeutungswandel und der Einfluß von Fremdsprachen auf den Wortschatz werden weitere Schwerpunkte des Seminars sein. Die Übungen erfordern eine Arbeit an Texten der früheren Sprachstufen und schließen damit einen ersten Zugang zum Spracherwerb (Alt- und Mittelhochdeutsch) mit ein.
