Das Seminar knüpft an die in der Vorlesung von 14-16 Uhr traktierten Themen an (s. Kommentar dort), konkretisiert diese aber auf der Basis von Quellenanalysen. Einen Schwerpunkt werden Revolten und Krisen bilden, die als klassische Felder der Geschichtswissenschaft, Veränderungen zu beschreiben, gelten können. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt werden vermeintliche oder tatsächliche Veränderungen längerer Dauer wie Wirtschaftsentwicklung, Professionalisierung- und Bürokratisierungsprozesse bilden. Die meisten Themenfelder werden in der Zeit zwischen 800 und 1800 angesiedelt sein, ohne dass das 19. und 20. Jahrhundert gänzlich ausgeschlossen würden.
Dezidiert erwünscht sind Themenvorschläge von Seiten der Seminarteilnehmer*innen, soweit sie sich im Rahmen der Veranstaltung behandeln lassen. Die einzelnen Themen werden in der ersten Sitzung gemeinsam mit den Seminarteilnehmer*innen festgelegt; dann wird auch die entsprechende Literatur gegeben. Bis dahin bleibt die für die Vorlesung gegebene Literatur auch für das Seminar grundlegend (siehe dort).
