The period of Romanticism was a short but intensive phase in British (and European) literature and culture that lasted, roughly, from the 1790s to the 1820s. In this seminar, we will explore the major texts by the most important writers of the period, the new and modern self-conceptions of the writers as artists, and the impact of Romanticism on other arts than literature, such as painting and music. We will read poetry, short stories, essays and a novel to get an impression of the breadth and variety of Romantic literary production in Britain.
It is strongly recommended that only students register for this class who have alredy attended Analysing and Interpreting Literary Texts (British Literature).
All students must buy their own copy of Mary Shelley, Frankenstein.
A reader containing all other texts we will discuss in the seminar (poems, essays, short stories) will be made available towards the beginning of the semester.
