This seminar, which is also open to advanced BA students as well as doctoral students, is directed mainly at MA students who are currently writing or intending to write a thesis in British literary and/or cultural studies. The meetings will be held in workshop style, with students presenting their projects and getting feedback on their ideas and results. In connection with these presentations, we will discuss how to plan and organize a research project, how to write research papers, and how to overcome the obstacles that typically occur in the process of doing scholarly research. Whenever no presentation from any of the participants has been scheduled, we will discuss approaches to the literary representation of London, taking into account the theoretical approaches proposed in the wake of the "spatial turn", ca. 25 years ago, which have signitficantly influenced literary and cultural studies until today.
Theoretical texts on the cultural turn and on literary London will be made availabel towards the beginning of the semester.
