The first two decades of the twentieth century saw major changes in technology and the sciences, and generally in mentalities and the arts. Writers confronted with, and involved in bringing about, these upheavals acted in diverse ways, either commenting on modernity with new themes or developing the new aesthetics of modernism. In this seminar, we will read texts by authors whose approach to fiction remained aesthetically traditional (Arnold Bennett, E.M. Forster), authors who searched for new insights into the human psyche and introduced new topics to literature (D.H. Lawrence) and writers who found that modern times required new styles of writing (Virginia Woolf, James Joyce and others). We will read three novels, a number of short stories and poems and some poetological essays. Please register for this course only if you are sure you can manage the reading load.
The short stories and poems will be made available in a reader at the beginning of the semester. Please buy your own copy of the following novels:
E.M. Forster, Howards End
D.H. Lawrence, Women in Love
Virginia Woolf, Mrs Dalloway
