This lecture-style course will introduce students to the history of British literature from the Middle Ages until today. We will survey the major authors and influential works from the various epochs of literary history, and we will trace the developments of drama, poetry and prose fiction. A special emphasis will be placed on the relationship between changes in literature and changes in the contexts of social, political, ideological and economic history.
Students ought to have completed the course "Analysing and Interpreting Literary Texts" before registering for this class.
Photocopies of the texts we will have a closer look at will be provided in the individual sessions (or made accessible via the "Dokumentenablage").
Students are nevertheless advised to purchase the Norton Anthology of English Literature (two volumes) - a good investment in your whole course of studies (and beyond) - from which many texts will be taken.
