232106 Ethnicity and/in Black British Film (S) (SoSe 2011)

Contents, comment

Britain has been a multi-ethnic country for a long time, and concepts of cultural identities as influenced by ethnicity have had an impact on political, ideological and religious discourses as well as on social practices. The visual media, especially film, have played a major role in shaping these discourses by making the 'black' (i.e. Asian, Caribbean and African) presence visible and by embracing the particular emotional impact of this medium. British-Asian, British-Caribbean and British-African filmmakers have thus contributed not only to an awareness of the conditions and problems attached to non-white ethnicity, but also to the general debate on British cultural identity. In this seminar, we will analyse and discuss five films (to be announced).

Please note: The course will be conducted as a block seminar. After one short introductory session, we will meet on five Mondays 10-16h to watch and discuss the movies. The dates for the seminar are
Mo. 4th April 10-12
Mo. 2nd May 10-16
Mo. 23rd May 10-16
Mo. 6th June 10-16
