230629 Current Research Paradigms: Sociology and Literature/Literary Sociologies (S) (WiSe 2010/2011)

Short comment

Beginn erst in der 2. Semesterwoche.

Contents, comment

After the major impact of literary sociology in the 1970s, the movement appeared to have run out of steam, since no unified school of literary sociology has ever developed. However, various theories have shaped the the field of sociological approaches to literature since then, and there is currently much research activity in a broad variety of areas, too. In this class, we will chart the field of literary sociologies. We will discuss the general relationship between sociology and the study of literature, and we will survey the most important contributions to literary sociology in the last three decades, including (Literary) Systems Theory, The Empirical Study of Literature, Pierre Bourdieu's theory of the Literary Field, as well as the specific Sociologies of Production, the Text, Reception, Distribution, and Criticism.

Bibliography

A reader containing all theoretical texts will be available towards the end of the summer term break.
