Strukturen und Probleme der nationalen Sozialpolitiken sind zu einem wesentlichen Teil auf die prägende Kraft historisch verfolgbarer 'Entwicklungspfade' zurückzuführen. Für das Verständnis der Gegenwart ist die Kenntnis solcher Hintergründe deshalb von großer Bedeutung.
In der Veranstaltung soll ein Überblick über die Entwicklung der Sozialpolitik von der Armenpflege im Mittelalter bis hin zu aktuellen wohlfahrtsstaatlichen Strukturen und Problemen gegeben werden. Schwerpunktmäßig geht es hierbei um die deutsche Sozialpolitik, Seitenblicke auf andere europäische Wohlfahrtsstaaten sind jedoch angestrebt. In historischer Perspektive wird ein Schwerpunkt auf den Ereignissen und Entwicklungen vor, während und nach der industriellen Revolution im 19. Jahrhundert liegen.
