Was können wir wissen? und Wie sicher ist unser Wissen? - Das sind zwei Grundfragen des Philosophierens. Sie zu stellen, bedeutet bereits die Möglichkeit des Zweifelns an unserer Erkenntnisfähigkeit und Erkenntnisgewissheit einzuräumen.
Der philosophische Zweifel wurde in der Antike intensiv diskutiert. Viele antike Philosophen neigten zu einem mehr oder weniger skeptischen Standpunkt und entwickelten Typologien des Zweifels. Neben der erkenntnistheoretischen Systematik antiken Zweifelns wird im Seminar auch die lebensphilosophische Bedeutung der Skepsis für die antiken Philosophen berücksichtigt.
Im Seminar werden vier Stationen der antiken Skepsis behandelt: (1) die rhetorische Skepsis des Gorgias von Leontinoi (485-380 v. Chr.), (2) die klassische Skepsis des Phyrro von Elis (ca. 360-270 v. Chr.), (3) die eklektizistische Skepsis Ciceros (106-43 v. Chr.) und (4) Skepsis und Skepsiskritik bei Augustinus (354-430).Eine Leistungsbescheinigung (BA-Studiengang) wird ausgestellt für eine Klausur und ein Kurzreferat (mit ca. sechs-seitiger Ausarbeitung). Ein Leistungsnachweis (Magister oder Lehramts-Studiengang) wird ausgestellt für eine Hausarbeit.
