In this course we'll take a closer at the time period between 1066 and 1500. This means that we'll look at the demographic make-up of and change in society, the role of the church and monarchy, which all set the background for and influenced linguistic change. We will look at Middle English grammar and phonology and work on numerous exercises, but will also look more closely at literary texts (for example, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales) and discuss in what ways the authors used English.
I expect that students taking this class not only have finished the history of English lecture but also have an interest in Middle English.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
We'll be doing worksheets in class as well as mini-presentations.
