This introductory seminar offers BA students the chance to read and discuss some of the texts that helped shaped what we now call queer and trans* studies. Together, we will try to understand what is meant by "queer": is it an identity, a perspective, a theory? And does it refer to gender or sexuality or both (or neither?)? What kinds of questions and approaches are taken up by trans* studies? Students will learn how these fields overlap and differ from one another, as well as how they relate to interdisciplinary gender studies. It is recommended that students have some basic background knowledge in gender and sexuality studies before taking this course.
