230176 The Americas: The American South (S) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

In this class we will look at language in the American South (not South America but the Southern States in the US). The first thing that we'll do is try and define the South, which can be done, of course, linguistically, but also culturally. Yet the focus lies on the linguistic American South, and when we look at it, we will use StAmE as a yard stick to compare Southern American English to. It is necessary that students who are taking this class are familiar with the descriptive levels of linguistics (esp. phonetics, phonology, morphology) introduced in "Introduction to Linguistics I." We'll also look at the heterogeneity of Southern American English and the variation we find not only one state, for example North Carolina, but also across states and at the isoglosses that have been described in different linguistic surveys and atlases (for example, Telsur and ANAE). In order to exemplify the different varieties auditorially, we'll listen to speech samples and watch selected scenes from movies.
