230108 Courtroom Drama: Dissecting a Genre - Justice, Law, and Ethics on the Big Screen (S) (WiSe 2022/2023)

Contents, comment

In this seminar, we will take a look at Courtroom Drama, a popular movie genre that gave birth to some of the most interesting and complex cinematic experiences and added heavily to the modern movie canon.
We will analyse a corpus of selected movies that are considered seminal for the development of the genre and will discuss tropes and their ideological implications for discourses surrounding justice, law, ethics, gender, race, etc.
Additionally, we will engage with and discuss relevant secondary literature dealing with different critical approaches to the genre.

This seminar will deal with topics like physical and psychological violence and may include the analysis of graphic (fictional) material. Viewer discretion is advised.

Bibliography

A list of movies will be made available in early September 2022.

In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

We will discuss potential Studienleistungen together at the beginning of the semester.
