392102 User studies in interactive intelligent systems (S) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

When building interactive systems, we should strive for systems that are useful for end users. We ensure this by running well-designed user studies.

This course will teach students the basics of planning, designing, running, and analyzing user studies for interactive intelligent systems.
In more detail, the topics are:

  • Scales and methods to evaluate interactive intelligent systems
  • Types of user studies (qualitative vs. quantitative, exploratory vs.

confirmatory, lab vs. online vs. field, etc.)

  • Basics of study design, including methods, time-planning, and ethics
  • Analysis of study results, including statistical methods

In the seminar, students will present and discuss example studies from the literature to deepen their understanding. In the exercises, students will plan, design, run, and analyze their own user study for a small example system. A written report should cover the study and reflect on the seminar topics.
