(Wert-)Neutralität, Unparteilichkeit und Unbefangenheit walten zu lassen, sind Normen, die sich an verschiedene Dritte richten, die sich z.B. von Berufs wegen mit Konflikten beschäftigen. Sie richten sich an Richter, Mediatoren und Moderatoren genauso wie an Soziologen, Historiker, Journalisten oder an Staaten. Dabei ist Neutralität kein Wesensmerkmal von Personen, sondern eine Erwartung, die sowohl vor dem vom Streit betroffenen Publikum dargestellt werden will als auch von diesem kooperativ mitgetragen wird oder eben nicht (Clayman 2001). In der Lehrveranstaltung gehen wir deshalb der Frage vergleichend nach, wie sich diese Dritten das Vertrauen in Ihre Neutralität verdienen, etwa durch ein gesetzlich geregeltes Verfahren, und wie sie jenes in Verhalten und Arbeitsweise zum Ausdruck bringen, z.B. durch „unpersönliches Handeln“ (Luhmann 2008: 95ff.). Gleichermaßen thematisieren wir jeweils Umstände und Situationen, die potentiell zum Verlust von Neutralität führen (ebd.: 134f.). Ferner ist von Interesse, welche Unterschiede die Neutralität für die Interaktion der Konfliktbearbeitung und die Gesellschaft insgesamt macht.
