Mit der wachsenden Prominenz des strukturell-individualistischen Ansatzes oder auch Essers Modell der soziologischen Erklärung gewinnt die Mikro-Makro-Unterscheidung in der Soziologie wieder an Bedeutung. Das Seminar hat zum Ziel, diese Unterscheidung zu untersuchen. Dabei geht es erstens um die Frage, was Mikro und Makro in unterschiedlichen Ansätzen bedeuten und wie ihre Verbindung verschiedenen Autoren zufolge aussieht. Zweitens soll diskutiert werden, ob sich sozialtheoretisch die Existenz einer "eigenständigen" Makroebene rechtfertigen lässt (Emergenz der Sozialen). Anhand von empirischen Studien soll schließlich drittens die methodische Dimension der Unterscheidung betrachtet werden (Brückenhypothesen, Aggregationslogik, Mehrebenenerklärungen, Prozessanalysen).
