Im Teil Grundoperationen werden die Verfahren zur Aufarbeitung biotechnologischer Produkte präsentiert. Dies reicht von der Zellabtrennung über Zellaufschluss bis zur chromatographischen Aufreinigung von Proteinen. Im Vordergrund stehen die Grundoperationen, die den Bedürfnissen der Biotechnologie in besonderer Weise entgegen kommen.. Hierzu gehören insbesondere auch Membranprozesse und Extraktionsverfahren. Parallel dazu findet jeweils eine Übung statt, die auf das Praktikum im nachfolgenden Semester vorbereitet. Dies ist generell vorgesehen, um aus der Verknüpfung von Theorie und Praxis ein Maximum an Lerneffekt zu erzielen.
