Mit der Semantik und der Pragmatik stehen zwei linguistische Beschreibungsebenen zur Verfügung, die sich mit der Bedeutung von sprachlichen Ausdrücken beschäftigen. Gegenstandsbereich der Semantik ist die Beschreibung und formale Rekonstruktion der wörtlichen Bedeutung sprachlicher Ausdrücke. Hierbei handelt es sich um diejenigen Bedeutungsaspekte, die sich allein aus den auftretenden sprachlichen Mitteln und – im Falle komplexer Ausdrücke – ihrer Kombinatorik ergeben. Alle weiteren Bedeutungsanteile fallen streng genommen nicht in den Bereich der Semantik, sondern ergeben sich aus konkreten Verwendungen der Ausdrücke, wodurch sie zu Untersuchungsgegenständen der Pragmatik werden. In der Lehrveranstaltung behandelte Themen sind z.B. verschiedene Dekompositionsanalysen von Wörtern, Aussagen- und Prädikatenlogik, verschiedene Typen von Inferenzen (Implikationen, Implikaturen, Präsuppositionen), Satzmodus und Illokution/Sprechakte und Aspekte der Informationsstruktur.
