Das Neuhochdeutsche ist in vielerlei Hinsicht merkwürdig: Warum wechselt beim Verb 'brennen' der Vokal zwischen Präsens und Präteritum von 'e' zu 'a' ('ich brenne' vs. 'ich brannte')? Aber nicht nur Vokale sind erklärungsbedürftig, sondern auch Konsonanten: Weshalb 'schneide' ich ein Brot, esse aber 'Schnittbrot'? Oder eine Kombination von sich eigentümlich verändernden Vokalen und Konsonanten wirft Fragen auf: Wieso 'denke' ich jetzt, aber 'dachte' ich gestern? Viele Aspekte des Neuhochdeutschen lassen sich nur verstehen, wenn man auch die älteren Sprachstufen des Deutschen kennt.
Im Seminar erarbeiten wir uns grundlegende Kenntnisse des Mittelhochdeutschen, indem wir gemeinsam die verrückte, ironische (?), in jedem Fall unterhaltsame Geschichte eines (vermeintlich?) vorbildlichen Ritters (mit Namen Mauritius von Craûn) lesen, der sich im Dienst für die angebetete Dame verausgabt. Neben der Morphologie und der Syntax wird ein Schwerpunkt auf die historische Semantik gelegt.
