311701 Evolutionäre Spieltheorie (Microeconomics 3b) (V) (WiSe 2008/2009)

Contents, comment

Evolutionary models analyse the interaction of boundedly rational agents of large populations. One property of evolutionary models is that relative successful behavior spreads within the population. The course considers the induced dynamics and various criteria of stability.

Evolutionary game theory offers a dynamic foundation of strategic equilibria.

Bibliography

The book "Population Games and Evolutionary Dynamics" by Bill Sandholm will be the guideline for the course. It is downloadable at

Previously, I announced

  • Jörgen Weibull, "Evolutionary Game Theory" 1995 MIT Press

as the main source; I still recommend it as there is much to learn from, however it is not obligatory to read.

  • Ken Binmore "Fun and Games" 1992 D.C. Heath

This outstanding text book on game theory contains with chapter 9 an excellent introduction to evolutionary game theory with perspectives from philosophy, mathematics and economics. Have a look at this chapter and gain a lot of intuition!
Again, this is just a recommendation.

  • Larry Samuelson 1997, "Evolutionary Games and Equilibrium Selection" 1997 MIT Press

Chapter 7 `Noise´ is quite helpful to learn about time discrete models.
