Contents, comment

Prof. Dr. Ahmed Icduygu is a DAAD guest lecturer at the Faculty of Sociology. Link to his personal website: http://www.ahmet-icduygu.com/

This course, after first focusing on the political and societal transformations occurred in the Mediterranean Basin throughout the last hundred years, examines the contemporary societal and political issues in the region. Analytical topics covered within the course will range from colonial history to democratization, from the EU enlargement to the Euro-Med cooperation, and from identity politics to migration. While the initial part of the course treats the Mediterranean Basin as a totality on the one hand, its following parts will widely consider the unique experiences of individual countries around the Basin. There will be some special emphasis on the country cases of Spain, Morocco, Greece, Turkey, and Syria, and also on the repercussions of so-called Arab Spring.
