Poetry is considered by many to be the supreme form of literary expression, combining precision, rhythm, imagery, and thought in phrases that become deeply embedded in the life of language. 20th century poetry, however, has largely broken with traditional models and so is often accused by its critics of being obscure, difficult, artificial, and elitist. In this course, we will look at the works of leading 20th century US poets and explore the characteristic styles and themes of modernist and postmodernist poetry and the ideas that lie behind these new aesthetics.
