Experimentation is one of the most important aspects of scientific practice. In this course we will examine the philosophical foundations of experimentation, through an examination of the following questions. What exactly is an experiment? Are there different types of experiments? How do experiments produce knowledge? What are the limitations of various types of experiments? When is an experiment successful? We will also acquire some hands-on experience of the potential and difficulties of conducting experiments, by participating in an experiment in the department of Biology.
