239641 "How do I love thee?" - Love Poetry through the Ages (V) (WiSe 2012/2013)

Love is, arguably, the most pervasive topic in the literature of all periods. Poetry in particular has been regarded as a suitable, almost natural, medium for the expression of romantic feelings. However, the concept of romantic love itself has been discovered to be a construction: Although love may be a universal emotion and an anthropological given, the expression of love underlies a variety of influences, including demands of poetic genre and the social construction of gender differences. In this seminar, we will trace the development of love poetry from the Early Modern period until today, exploring the factors that influenced the modes of expression of love.
