Competencies

The modules imparts knowledge of sociological theory and enables students to reflect on and apply sociological theories in their breadth. In the lectures on qualitative and quantitative methods, students acquire an overview of sociological research methods. Students are able to critically discuss theories and empiricism of general sociology and special sociologies and to assess their ability to analyse current social processes.

Content of teaching

The theory lecture builds on the theoretical knowledge acquired in the BA degree programme and provides an overview of the most important sociological theories. The theories are largely presented with reference to the subject areas covered in the specialization profiles.

The two methods lectures deal with qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical social research. In the qualitative methods lecture, the most important qualitative methods are deepened on the basis of recent empirical studies. (e.g. ethnography, narrative interview, group discussion, conversation analysis, content analysis) and central methods of qualitative data analysis are presented (e.g. grounded theory, ethnomethodology, objective hermeneutics). The quantitative methods lecture focuses primarily on statistical methods. The statistical methods are based on the descriptive statistics of the BA programme and in particular inferential statistics. In Addition, an overview of multivariate data analysis technologies will be given.

While the theory lecture is intended to provide orientation in the complex field of theories and promote the independent use of the theoretical instruments of sociology, the method lectures build on the methodological knowledge taught in the BA degree programme and create the basis for the later application of methodological procedures.

Students are expected to have basic knowledge of sociological theory and quantitative and qualitative methods.
