Biology explores the diversity of life and the principles governing biological systems – from molecular processes to the dynamics of entire ecosystems. The subject in Biology provides a foundation in the theory and practice (laboratory and fieldwork) of the subject. The focus is on experiments and explaining complex relationships. During the specialisation phase, students study biology didactics.
An important component of the programme is the didactics of biology. It combines subject-specific content with the question of how to teach biological topics in school in an age-appropriate, understandable and competency-based manner. Students engage with the planning, analysis and reflection of biology lessons and learn to use experiments, models and other subject-specific approaches in a way that promotes effective learning. In addition, the programme develops the foundations for student-centred and differentiation-sensitive teaching that addresses current biological and socially relevant topics.
The Bachelor's thesis can be written as either a didactic or a subject-specific paper. The Bachelor of Science with a teaching option leads to the Master of Education programme.
Access to the Bachelor programme is granted to those who have a university entrance qualification suitable for Germany (e. g. German ‘Abitur’).
