El pueblo de San Basilio de Palenque (a unos 60 km al sureste de Cartagena de Indias, en el Caribe colombiano) acoge una lengua y cultura fascinantes que resultan de un particular sincretismo hispano-africano. Seguramente, la comunidad palenquera es la más destacada y la mejor estudiada de las diferentes comunidades de afro-descendientes que se extienden por buena parte de Latinoamérica.

San Basilio de Palenque se conformó históricamente a partir de varias comunidades de esclavos fugitivos en los Montes de María durante el siglo XVII. Junto al elemento hispánico, las investigaciones antropológicas, genéticas (basadas en ADN mitocondrial), históricas y lingüísticas han demostrado la conexión entre los afrodescendientes de San Basilio de Palenque y el grupo etno-lingüístico bakongo de la selva de Mayombe, la cual se extiende por la provincia de Cabinda, en Angola, y el área occidental de la República del Congo y la República Democrática del Congo (Ansari-Pour/Moñino 2016; Schwegler 2016). De esta región, pues, salieron los esclavos que, llegados a la Colombia colonial, cabe considerar 'fundadores' de la comunidad palenquera.

Dependiendo de los intereses científicos individuales de los estudiantes, éstos podrán orientar sus trabajos hacia el estudio de los aspectos culturales, sociales e históricos que condicionan la variación y diversidad lingüísticas en el pueblo (incluyendo el bilingüismo castellano-palenquero) o hacia el análisis de fenómenos lingüístico-estructurales concretos (fonológicos, léxicos, sintácticos, etc.).

Se recomienda a los participantes tener conocimientos al menos básicos de lingüística iberorrománica. No se requieren conocimientos previos de las culturas y lenguas centroafricanas (bantúes); los fundamentos necesarios a este respecto se impartirán durante el seminario.
