This seminar will explore the rich potential of film as a medium for language and cultural learning. Participants will critically reflect on the 'unofficial canon' of films frequently used in classrooms, before expanding their scope to include short films, feature films, TV series, dystopian cinema and documentaries. Students will examine how the different formats and genres of these films can support language learning, cultural learning and critical thinking. Seminar work will include watching and discussing two to three selected films, producing a reflective essay, delivering micro-teaching sequences and creating film-based teaching units. By the end of the course, participants will have gained both theoretical insights and practical tools for effectively integrating film into English language education.
