This course provides an introduction to key authors, genres, periods, concepts, methods, and fields of research in US American literary and cultural studies. Particular emphasis is given to the analysis and theory of Poetry, Drama, Spoken Word & Hip Hop as major genres in the respective literary periods. The course aims at offering students a profound and broad basis for textual analysis and research in future seminars and independent study. Furthermore, the course works well in combination or as a supplement with both "Analyzing and Interpreting Literary Texts" and the "Survey in US. American Literature".

Students are asked to participate regularly in the in-class discussions, moderate an session and hand in several reflection papers on individual texts.
The requirements will be presented in detail during the first session.
