260031 Philosophy of Language [*H*] (S) (SoSe 2025)

Language is one of the most fundamental aspects of human life. We use it to communicate, express thoughts, and describe the world around us. But what exactly is meaning? How do words relate to objects? And what makes linguistic communication possible?

This course in the philosophy of language will explore these and other foundational questions. First, we will examine key concepts and themes in the philosophical study of language, with a particular focus on semantics—the study of meaning. Then, we will read some of the classic works in the field, with particular emphasis on the contributions of Gottlob Frege and Bertrand Russell. Their groundbreaking theories on sense and reference, definite descriptions, and logical form have shaped much of the contemporary debate in the philosophy of language.

Dieser Kurs wird zwar auf Englisch angeboten, Beiträge in deutscher Sprache sind aber ebenfalls möglich, da die Lehrperson Deutsch versteht.

Teilnahmevoraussetzungen, notwendige Vorkenntnisse

Abschluss des ersten Studienjahres (beide Grundkurse, Philosophischer Einstieg und Philosophisches Schreiben), sofern Sie den Kurs nicht als Handwerksseminar besuchen.
