Geschichtsdidaktik versteht sich - anders als manche andere Fachdidaktik - nicht alleine als Wissenschaft (oder gar Lehre) von der Unterrichtsmethodik, sondern nimmt darüber hinaus in den Blick, wie das Erfahren von zeitlichen Veränderungen und der Umgang damit das Individuum ("Geschichtsbewusstsein") ebenso prägen wie die Gesellschaft ("Geschichtskultur"). Das Seminar setzt sich daher mit grundlegenden theoretischen Konzeptionen von Geschichtsbewusstsein auseinander, um zu ergründen, wie frühes historisches Lernen (und damit die Entwicklung und Förderung von Geschichtsbewusstsein) gelingen kann. Dazu werden Kompetenzmodelle historischen Lernens ebenso in den Blick genommen wie historische Vorstellungen von Schülerinnen und Schülern im Grundschulalter; einzelne Sitzungen thematisieren die Herausforderungen historischen Lernens im Kontext inklusiven Lernens sowie den Umgang mit "schwierigen" Themen wie dem Nationalsozialismus im Sachunterricht.

Studierende, die die Veranstaltung im Rahmen des Moduls SU12G belegen (in Verbindung mit dem Grundkurs Historische Lebenswelten), erbringen im Theorieseminar eine Studienleistung durch die (Mit-)Gestaltung einer Seminarsitzung auf Grundlage einschlägiger Texte. Studierende im Modul SU11 (in Verbindung mit der Veranstaltung "Sachunterricht inklusiv") schreiben nach Ende des Semesters eine Hausarbeit als Prüfungsleistung.
