Mit Public Understanding of Science (PUS) wird eine Bewegung beschrieben, die sich seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts vor allem in Europa und in den USA entwickelt hat und die Popularisierung wissenschaftlichen Wissens bzw. die Repräsentation der Wissenschaft gegenüber der Öffentlichkeit zum Ziel hat. Beides findet in erheblichem Maße in den und über die Massenmedien statt. Die Thematisierung von Wissenschaft und Wissenschaftlern in fiktiven Medien hat dabei nur selten Berücksichtigung gefunden, obwohl gerade durch große Spielfilme und Literatur zumeist ein wesentlich größeres Publikum erreicht werden kann.
Zunächst verschafft das Seminar einen Überblick über das Forschungsfeld PUS. Darauf folgend erarbeiten wir uns Ausschnitte aus der einschlägigen Literatur zur Darstellung von Wissenschaft in Spielfilmen, Literatur (primär Science Fiction, Krimis und historische Romane), Comics, Theaterstücken und/ oder Computerspielen. Leistungspunkte sollen in Form von Projekten und Präsentationen von den teilnehmenden Studierenden erworben werden.
