En los últimos años se ha evidenciado de manera más clara el rol de los medios en los procesos sociales, políticos y económicos. No obstante, se ha tomado este rol como secundario o los medios como instrumento de la dominación por parte de los grupos dominantes en cada sociedad. Si bien esto último puede ser cierto hasta cierto punto, los medios juegan un rol determinante. El seminario parte de la premisa que los medios de comunicación son condición de posibilidad para la aparición de los distintos fenómenos sociales. En otras palabras, que la aparición de nuevos movimientos sociales o políticos, por ejemplo, sólo son posibles si existen los medios que lo permitan. Esta inversión en los valores permitiría entender de una manera más profunda los distintos fenómenos que aparecen en las Américas.
