In this seminar we will be looking at the principles that apply to the process of language standardization (the implications of power and the consequences of identity). This is closely connected to problems of codification and to the question of acceptance and the attitudes which language users bring to language (correct, bad, uneducated, polished, vulgar, slangy, etc.). Consequently, a fair amount of attention will be devoted to exploring what General English is. Clearly, this will involve looking at what Standard English is and what General Non-Standard English is, both of which exist in varying realizations.
BaAngBM2 must be completed.
A literature / reading list will be provided.

Students will be expected to do the assigned reading and other homework tasks. I would also like all of the participants (individually or in small groups) to undertake a limited exploration of the non-standard features of a currently used non-standard variety. Furthermore, in order to get full credit (3 points), you may make an oral presentation, which is to be expanded into a written version or you may expand on your work on “your” non-standard variety. As an alternative you may take the final exam.
