220048 Science, Industry and the State (S) (SoSe 2022)

Contents, comment

The development of the nation state, industrialization, and the organized scientific enterprise are closely intertwined features. The interest of both industry and government has shaped organizational forms, methodological issues, and the research output of the sciences. This has been with us until now, as recent debates on innovation capabilities, educational policy and ethical questions concerning scientific research show. The seminar will raise the following questions, among others: How are government and industry involved in organizing the production of scientific knowledge, and, vice versa, how does scientific knowledge influence government and the economy? What features characterize knowledge that is produced under such organizational conditions? Which relationship does the organization of science hold to political, economic and epistemic issues?
