Im Reigen der insgesamt fünf Kulturzentren des griechisch-römischen Kulturkreises bildete das antike Athen das zweite Kulturzentrum. Die Vorlesung beleuchtet auf dem Hintergrund des vorausgehenden und der nachfolgenden Kulturzentren systematisch die verschiedenen Bereiche, in denen das antike Athen kulturell aktiv und für die Folgezeit auch in vielerlei Hinsicht vorbildlich oder doch von besonderer Bedeutung war.
