Mit Public Understanding of Science (PUS) wird eine Bewegung beschrieben, die sich seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts vor allem in Europa und in den USA entwickelt hat und die Popularisierung wissenschaftlichen Wissens bzw. die Repräsentation der Wissenschaft gegenüber der Öffentlichkeit zum Ziel hat. In den letzten Jahrzehnten, einhergehend mit einer zunehmenden Wissenschaftsskepsis und Technikfeindlichkeit der Öffentlichkeit, haben die Fragestellungen des Forschungsfeldes PUS neue Aktualität gewonnen. Im Rahmen des Seminars wollen wir uns zunächst einen Überblick über das Forschungsfeld PUS und die einschlägige Literatur verschaffen. Dabei werden die jeweils unterschiedlichen Bedingungen und Voraussetzungen der drei am Diskurs beteiligten Instanzen Wissenschaft, Medien und Öffentlichkeit im Mittelpunkt stehen.
