« Weltliteratur » und « französisch » sind nicht unbedingt Widersprüche. So haben die Autoren Michel Le Bris und Jean Rouaud im Rahmen eines Literaturfestivals einen Artikel mit dem Titel « Pour une littérature-monde en français » veröffentlicht. Gemeinsam mit einer Vielzahl von Mitunterzeichnenden stellen sie dort ein Programm für eine welthaltige Literatur (nicht littérature mondiale) in französischer Sprache auf. Diese Forderung hat nicht zuletzt seitens der post-kolonialer Forscher*innen für viel Kritik gesorgt.
Angefangen bei Goethes Gesprächen mit Eckermann schauen wir uns gemeinsam die wichtigsten Etappen der Diskussion um Weltliteratur bis zu Damrosch, Sturm-Trigonaikis etc. an. Dabei stehen sind die Fragen: Was ist das Konzept von Welt? Was ist eigentlich Literatur und was die entscheidenden Faktoren für eine Weltliteratur? Le Bris und Rouads Denkschrift ist auch der Ausgangspunkt, um ausgewählte literarische Beispiele dieser Gruppe vor ihren Forderungen zu lesen.

Primärtexte bzw. Auszüge werden im französischen Original sowie in deutscher Übersetzung angeboten. Gegebenenfalls sind ergänzend oder zusätzlich Sekundärtexte auf englischer Sprache zu lesen.
