250272 The psychology of intergroup relations (S) (SoSe 2021)

The current course will offer a lens through which students could examine relations between different groups in their society (e.g., Germans and immigrants) and understand the different motivations group members have while interacting with others. We look first at social identity theory and try to see its relevance for current issues in Germany and worldwide. The course will allow students to learn about different intergroup phenomena and examine why they happen, such as discrimination, intergroup communication, ingroup criticism, acculturation, crowd behaviour, misrecognition and current intergroup conflicts. Additionally, some part of the course will involve dialogue sessions between the different existing groups in the seminar through which students will apply the theories they learned about during the course.
