In this course we will discuss different varieties of English used in North America, for example African American Vernacular English, Canadian English, or Gullah. We will not only focus on structural aspects of these varieties, but also consider the social dimensions of language use. We will try to understand who uses these varieties, in which situations speakers do so, and maybe even when speakers choose to distance themselves from certain varieties. These questions are closely linked with issues of power, and the negotiation of power as it pertains to language use will therefore play a central role in this class.
