230219 Analyzing and Interpreting Literary Texts: U.S.- American Literatures (S) (S) (SoSe 2019)

This course is designed to introduce first-year students to the basics of U.S. American literary studies. Students will be introduced to different literary genres – poetry, drama/film, and narrative – and will learn to critically use key terms and methods in the analysis of a variety of thought-provoking U.S. American literary texts.

The BM 2 module description further states:

"In diesem Modul erweitern die Studierenden ihre Fertigkeiten in der Textanalyse und Interpretation, indem sie zum einen theoretisch-konzeptionelles Wissen und zum anderen Übersicht über wichtige Autoren und Autorinnen sowie gattungsspezifische und literaturhistorische Kontexte erwerben. Sie lernen, literarische Texte als Kommunikationsformen, als Kunstformen und als kulturelle Produkte zu verstehen und werden sich der verschiedenen Einflussfaktoren auf Sprache und Literatur bewusst. Darüber hinaus machen sie sich mit den formalen Kriterien literaturwissenschaftlichen Arbeitens (Diktion, Zitierweisen, Bibliographieren, etc.) vertraut und sind nach Absolvierung dieses Moduls in der Lage, eigenständig entwickelte Textanalysen und -interpretationen in englischer Sprache zu verfassen. Das Modul führt die Studierenden sowohl in die wissenschaftlichen Herangehensweisen an literarische Texte als auch in deren theoretische Reflexion, ihre ästhetische literarische Dimension und ihre kontextuell-kulturellen, gattungsspezifischen und literaturhistorischen Ermöglichungsbedingungen ein. In den Seminaren "Analysing and Interpreting British Literary Texts" und "Analyzing and Interpreting American Literary Texts" werden die Studierenden mit zentralen literarischen Formen und den Methoden ihrer Analyse und Interpretation ebenso vertraut gemacht wie mit den Grundzügen der britischen bzw. amerikanischen Literaturgeschichte sowie den terminologischen Grundlagen der anglistischen Literaturwissenschaft und ihren theoretischen und konzeptuellen Ansätzen."
