This course will first explore theories of motivation which are relevant for foreign language learning. We will consider some traditional qualitative differences in language learning motivation (integrative versus instrumental, intrinsic versus extrinsic), examine factors which may influence the intensity of motivation in a given individual, and assess the extent to which the teacher can influence learner motivation, both positively and negatively. The role of motivation in determining language learning achievement will be explored compared to a variety of learner variables, such as intelligence, attitude, age, personality, which research suggests may also contribute to language learning success or failure.
